What an Autism Assessment Involves

Every assessment is individualised to your child’s presentation, strengths and needs. Depending on age, goals and available information, your child’s assessment may include:

1. Parent/Carer Consultation

We start with a detailed developmental interview to understand your child’s early history, current strengths, daily experiences and areas of concern.

2. Standardised Assessment Tools

These may include:

  • MIGDAS-2 (Monteiro Interview Guidelines for Diagnosing the Autism Spectrum – Second Edition)
  • ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule)
  • Cognitive or educational testing (if needed)
  • Adaptive behaviour measures
  • Behaviour and emotional functioning questionnaires completed by parents and teachers

Our psychologists select tools based on evidence, clinical guidelines and the purpose of the assessment, consistent with AHPRA expectations for safe and effective assessment practice.

3. School or Early Childhood Input

With consent, we gather information from teachers or support staff to understand how your child engages across settings.

4. Clinical Formulation & Report

You will receive a comprehensive written report that outlines:

  • Assessment results
  • Diagnostic considerations based on DSM-5-TR
  • Strengths-based recommendations
  • Practical supports for home and school
  • Referrals for allied health and community services
  • Pathways for NDIS or school-based funding (if relevant)

5. Feedback Session

Your psychologist will meet with you to discuss the outcomes, answer questions and provide clear next steps.

Our Assessment Style

Our team works in a way that is:

Neuroaffirming

We recognise autism as a neurotype, not a deficit. Our reports focus on strengths, communication preferences and support needs.

Evidence-based

Assessments are grounded in up-to-date clinical research and psychological best practice.

Trauma-informed

We ensure children feel safe, respected and supported throughout the process.

Culturally sensitive

We consider culture, language and family values when understanding developmental patterns.
